Between April 23 - 30 in 1920, an ice hockey tournament marked the early start of the Games. Held in the "Palais de Glace" or Ice Palace in Antwerp, it was the first time that ice hockey was an Olympic sport & took place during the VII Summer Olympiade Games.

Had the war not intervened, Berlin would have played host to the 1916 Summer Olympics, where the first Olympic ice hockey tournament was planned to take place as part of a "winter sports week". After the war, Germany was excluded from the IIHF between 1920 and 1926.
