The Dawes Rolls (or Final Rolls of Citizens and Freedmen of the Five Civilized Tribes, or Dawes Commission of Final Rolls) were created by the United States Dawes Commission. The commission was authorized by United States Congress in 1893 to execute the General Allotment Act of 1887.
Information on the Dawes Rolls. The Dawes Commission was organized in 1893 to accept applications for tribal enrollment between 1899 and 1907 from American Indians of the Five Civilized Tribes who resided in the Indian Territory, which later became the eastern portion of Oklahoma.
The resulting lists of those who were accepted as eligible for land became known as the Dawes Rolls. Why search the Dawes Rolls? The Rolls contain over 101,000 names and can be searched to discover the enrollee’s name, sex, blood degree, and census card number.
