Dec 10, 2019 · This plane, still bat shaped but much bigger with a 46 foot wingspan and 2 30 horsepower steam engines wan named the Avion III. This flew in 1897 but was blown off course by the wind. The government declared it a failure and pulled funding. Ader’s Avion III in flight in 1897.

The Wright Brothers built their success on the basis of his work, and were much more secretive. If we mention Clement Ader, we also need to include Hiram Maxim and maybe even Samuel P. Langley . They ( and a few more ) all tried to create powered aircraft, but did not get it all right.
Ader was able to finance his third prototype, Avion 3, which he finished in 1897 and tested in Satory on 12 and 14 October 1897; this time, the aircraft flew a distance of 300 meters. In 1902, however, Ader abandoned his aviation work because the army had withdrawn funding and he was unable to meet the costs alone.
After extensive taxi tests, Ader attempted a flight at Satory on October 14, 1897. Some witnesses contend that the Avion rolled, took off towards the sky and, before the official commission, flew a distance of more than 300 yards (300 m), while others contend that the Avion III crashed before even taking off.
