Marie was in her late thirties when she was executed, and I’m sure completely worn down by the stress of the revolution. I wanted to combine the features of the death mask with those of the portraits.

On the orders of National Assembly, Tussaud made death mask of Jean-Paul Marat after Charlotte Corday stabbed him to death in his bath. Later, when Charlotte Corday was executed, Tussaud was asked to mold her face as well. She also made the cast of lawyer-statesman Robespierre, whom she had met at her Uncle’s home.
There's no reason to think that anyone made a death mask from Marie Antoinette's head. The "decapitated" Marie Antoinette head is probably the regular Tussaud wax mold, remade with closed eyes for the revamped "Chamber of Horrors" section that was expanded after Tussaud herself died.
