It depicts Montagne Sainte-Victoire and the valley of the Arc River, with Cézanne's hometown of Aix-en-Provence in the background.
The mountain of Sainte-Victoire, near where he grew up in Aix-en-Provence, was one of Cézanne’s favourite subjects. He carefully composed his pictures, applying the pigment with short brushstrokes, creating zones of colour and breaking with the traditional laws of perspective. Roger Fry championed Cézanne’s work in Great Britain.
