Etc etc. The main bus is a more robust solution, because it splits off resources (somewhat) more fairly. It is also more visually understandable. The tradeoff is that it requires much more space reserved for it, and many more belts and splitters spent upfront. It also requires more planning and knowledge of the game.
Just add more belts, in most designs ( from what I've seen ), the main bus is 4 lanes of iron plates, and one of the things they do is to put a 4-4 belt balancer after splitting one of the lines this helps a lot, specially if you split to a lower belt rating ( for example 4 blue belts and when splitting to the side is only one yellow belt ...

think about it, when you fill the main bus, your input of the main bus is determined by the amount of smelters you have. if you have enough smelters to make a full 4 lanes. then tahts your input. with red belt, you're looking at 30 items per second per lane. so a total of 120 items per second on the 4 lanes.
