Exploring Mainz is an awesome 4-7 hour layover activity from FRA airport! Just up the river in the opposite direction of downtown Frankfurt are two more local and authentic towns of Mainz and Wiesbaden. Both of these towns are a little more charming, quaint, and welcoming than downtown Frankfurt. The shopping, however, isn’t as expansive.
Check out at 19:00 and head back to the airport. Trains run every 15 min. and you will be at the airport in 11 min. Most of the so called airport hotels, other than the Sheraton and the Hiltons, require a shuttle for which you will end up either waiting a long time for it, or have to pay for it. Staying in the city is more efficient and cheaper.
Frankfurt can offer: a historic centre (most of it a post-war reconstruction) walks along the river with views of the finance district. a zoo. a shopping district. lots of museums and art galleries. As a tourist destination it's actually overrated, but you should find enough things to do to kill some time.
