Measuring the World is a novel of adventures, and perhaps most successful in that Kehlmann expertly mixes adventures of the mind with actual experience. Humboldt's South American expedition is fascinating, with Kehlmann offering many of the colourful details and encounters, but it's not a faithful historical account.
