Feb 23, 2022 · About Belle Isle State Park. Belle Isle may be small, but it’s absolutely full of nature, culture, fun, and Michigan history. In the 1700s, French settlers used the island for their livestock, which gave it the original name “Hog Island.” Eventually, it became known as Belle Isle, and the park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted.
