Cy Endfield (1914–1995) was a filmmaker who was also fascinated by the worlds of close-up magic, science, and invention. After directing several distinctive low-budget films in Hollywood, he was blacklisted in 1951 and fled to Britain rather than “name names” before HUAC, the U.S. House of Representatives’ Un-American Activities Committee.
The film was directed by American screenwriter Cy Endfield and produced by Stanley Baker and Endfield, with Joseph E. Levine as executive producer. The screenplay was by Endfield and historical writer John Prebble, based on Prebble's 1958 Lilliput article "Slaughter in the Sun".
Born at the beginning of World War I to a working-class Jewish family in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Cyril (Cy) Endfield attended Yale University and then lived in New York City, where he joined the New Theatre League School and dabbled in Communism in the mid-1930s, before moving to Los Angeles in 1940 to try his luck as a screenwriter and director in Hollywood.
