THE FAILING OF RAYMOND is about as over-dramatic as you can get and it seems pretty clear that the film is desperately trying to be some sort of psychological thriller much like PSYCHO. Both films deal with a troubled young man and of course you can look at this teacher as somewhat of a mother figure.
