Jan 24, 2019 · “Lady of the Tropics” does not have a happy ending. And even if it had, you have to wonder if Bill and Manon would have been able to live happily in America without prejudice. Since “everyone back home” was laughing at Bill, probably not. As for 1939, “Lady of the Tropics” is an important film.

The lady in question is half-caste Manon De Vargnes (Hedy Lamarr), a resident of prewar Saigon. American playboy Bill Carey (Robert Taylor) falls madly in love with Manon, but both have their crosses to bear: she is affianced to an Indochinese prince, and he is unable to secure a passport to bring her back to the United States.
Synopsis. A party of yachting jet-setters visit French Saigon, where they meet lovely Manon deVargnes, a second-class citizen not allowed to leave the country due to her part-Oriental ancestry. When the others leave, playboy Bill Carey stays behind to woo Manon; but all his efforts to get her out of the country with him run into a brick wall.
