Biography of Grenville M. Dodge (1831-1916) Grenville M. Dodge was born in Danvers, MA in 1831, and graduated from Norwich University in 1850 as a civil engineer. He began surveying in Illinois and in 1851 was hired by the Illinois Central Railroad, and then the Mississippi & Missouri Railroad from Davenport to Council Bluffs, IA.

Dodge City, Kansas was secondarily named for him (the town grew up around an abandoned United States Army fort named for Grenville Dodge, and the town retained the already existing local name). His residence in Council Bluff is now the Grenville M. Dodge National Historic House and Museum.
