Eugenio Montale was born into a family of businessmen in Genoa, Italy, on October 12, 1896. During World War I, he served as an infantry officer on the Austrian front. Originally, Montale had trained to be an opera singer, but when his voice teacher died in 1923, he gave up singing and concentrated on writing.
Eugenio Montale was born in Genoa, Italy. He took voice lessons from baritone Ernesto Sivori, but the outbreak of World War I, the death of Sivori and his decision to pursue poetry led him to abandon his music career. He settled in Florence in 1928 where he became director of the Gabinett Vieusseux library.
