NBA Indiana Pacers’ name honors the state’s history of using pace cars for the Indy 500 auto racing and also its harness racing industry. A pace car is used in motorsports to limit the speed of competing cars in case of an obstruction on the race track or bad weather. It was first used in auto racing in 1911 at the inaugural Indianapolis 500.
