Nov 18, 2022 · There are, at present, 44 countries in Europe, according to the UN. The United Nations geoscheme for Europe has divided the continent into different regions. As per this scheme, there are ten countries in Northern Europe, ten in Eastern Europe, nine in Western Europe, and fifteen in Southern Europe.
Compared to other continents, Europe is quite densely populated and predominantly urban. On average, a population density of around 60-70 inhabitants per km² is reached, although it is somewhat lower in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. Almost all languages in Europe have Indo-European origins.
European culture consists of a range of national and regional cultures, which form the central roots of the wider Western civilisation, and together commonly reference ancient Greece and ancient Rome, particularly through their Christian successors, as crucial and shared roots.
