It falls on the day before a change in the gas and electricity unit rates for those on variable tariffs. This currently happens once every three months in line with the changes in Ofgem's price cap.

Reading your meter. There are three types of electricity meter: dial, liquid crystal display (LCD) and mechanical display. Each meter can have up to three rates. A one rate meter is known as ‘Standard’. A two rate meter is known as ‘Economy 7’ or ‘Evening/Weekend’. A three rate meter is usually known as ‘Evening/Weekend/Night’.
