Size comparison with a human. Unlike most squid species, the colossal squid exhibits abyssal gigantism, as it is the heaviest living invertebrate species, reaching weights up to 495 kg (1,091 lb). For comparison, squids typically have a mantle length of about 30 cm (12 in) and weigh about 100–200 g (3 + 1 ⁄ 2 –7 oz).
Giant squid, Architeuthis dux (Steenstrup, 1857), of the family Architeuthidae, are possibly the largest known cephalopod, the largest known mollusk and, likely, the largest invertebrate ever known to exist (except for possibly colossal squids, Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni which may have a mantle length nearly twice the size of the giant squid!).

The colossal squid is the largest. The female giant squid is much larger than the male. Females average about 43 feet (13 meters) in length. The much smaller males are believed to grow to about 33 feet (10 meters). There have been claims of specimens of up to 66 feet (20 meters), but none have been officially documented.
The colossal squid also has the biggest eyes of all animals, helping it find and hunt prey in the murky ocean depths. It is, however, shorter than the giant squid but weighs more than it due to the giant squid’s smaller body. This species is an ambush predator and has the largest beak in the squid family.
