May 24, 2024 · The history of Manche France dates back to Gallo-Roman times when it was called Briovera. It was later renamed after Saint Lô, the 6th-century bishop of Coutances. In the Middle Ages, it became a major fortress and was known for its weaving. In 1796, Saint-Lô replaced Coutances as the capital of Manche département.
