- 1:58Striking US video game actors say AI threatens their jobsReuters VideosSTORY: Hollywood is seeing a new strike this summer over AI - this time, over work in video games. Striking game voice actors and motion-capture performers held their first picket on Thursday (August 1) in front of Warner Bros. Games, saying that AI is a threat to their careers. Chief negotiator at SAG-AFTRA Duncan Crabtree-Ireland is at the forefront of the operation: "They are trying to separate out some of our members and say we're not going to give these protections to some of you. We're going to give them just to a few and not to everyone. That's unacceptable. And the fact is, everybody needs protection from abusive use of AI. Actually, everybody in this country needs protection from it.” The strike follows failed labor negotiations with game developers focused on AI protections and follows similar strikes last year surrounding film and television. The gaming strikes began last week. Among other sticking points is lack of recognition for motion capture actors, whose likenesses are already being fed into AI systems. Andi Norris performed movements for major games over the last few years including the main antagonist in 'Diablo IV,' Lilith, and was the model for most of the female characters in fantasy shooter 'Immortals of Aveum'. "You don't know that I have done these characters because I'm not attached to it, right?," The decision to strike follows months of negotiations with major video game companies. However, analysts have said that major publishers like Electronic Arts and Take-Two will likely stave off a big hit from the strike due to their in-house studios and the lengthy development cycles for games. The NO FAKES Act, a bipartisan bill in Congress which would make it illegal to make an AI replica of someone’s likeness and voice without their permission, has gained support from the SAG-AFTRA performers union, the Motion Picture Association, The Recording Academy and Disney. Several global figures have said AI are an urgent policy issue, from Taylor Swift to Vice President Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democratic nominee in this year's US election.23 hours ago

- 1:14Ex-BBC anchor pleads guilty to indecent child pictures chargesReuters VideosSTORY: Former top BBC anchor Huw Edwards – who led coverage of major events including the announcement of Queen Elizabeth II’s death – pleaded guilty on Wednesday to three counts of making indecent pictures of children. Edwards, who was the BBC's highest paid journalist until he quit in April, appeared at London's Westminster Magistrates' Court. During the hearing, the prosecutor said 41 still or moving images had been sent to Edwards by an adult male on WhatsApp between December 2020 and August 2021. Two were described as pornographic videos of a child possibly aged seven and nine years old. Edwards' lawyer emphasized that the charges he pleaded guilty to were related only to images sent to him via WhatsApp. The guilty plea marks a monumental fall for the presenter, a household name in Britain. He led coverage of landmark moments which also included elections, King Charles III’s coronation, royal weddings and the 2012 Olympics. Edwards is due to be sentenced on September 16.3 days ago
- 2:19Venezuela's opposition claims proof of Maduro election lossReuters VideosSTORY: Demonstrators packed the streets of Caracas on Tuesday cheering for Venezuela's opposition, who said they had vote tallies to prove that President Nicolas Maduro had lost Sunday's election in a landslide -- despite the country's election authority declaring his victory. Opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez waved what appeared to be tally sheets at the crowds, alongside opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who was barred from running in the election but spearheaded the campaign for Gonzalez. They said Gonzalez had more than twice as many votes as Maduro in the presidential election, based on the 90% of vote tallies they had been able to access. "With these numbers, we will begin the reconstruction of Venezuela hand in hand with all of you," Gonzalez told the crowd. ::July 28, 2024 Venezuela's electoral authority had announced on Monday that the incumbent president had secured a third term with 51% of the vote, saying he'd won "the majority of valid votes." But the opposition alleges the electoral body's bias towards the dictatorial government. ::July 28, 2024 The U.S.-based Carter Center, which observed the vote, said in a statement late on Tuesday, the election "did not meet international standards of electoral integrity and cannot be considered democratic." It added that the electoral authority's failure to publish disaggregated results amounts to a "serious breach," outlining what it said was a deeply flawed process from start to finish. Protests have erupted across the country, with voters demanding transparency in the election. At least 11 people have been killed in incidents related to the count or associated protests, according to a local human rights group. As tensions ran high, cameras have captured police hitting and kicking protesters before detaining them. Maduro's government has denounced the protests as an attempted coup. On Tuesday evening, the president ordered military and police patrols across the country. He also called Gonzalez a coward, and Machado a terrorist, accusing them of fomenting violence.3 days ago

- 2:22Kamala Harris pledges to win Georgia at spirited Atlanta rallyReuters VideosSTORY: Likely Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris held a spirited rally in Atlanta on Tuesday that highlighted the new energy she has brought to November’s election against Republican nominee Donald Trump. "So the momentum in this race is shifting and there are signs that Donald Trump is feeling it." The Vice President took jabs at Trump and his running mate JD Vance. “And by the way, don't you find some of their stuff to just be plain weird?” There are less than 100 days to go in one of the least predictable election seasons in recent memory. Since Biden ended his reelection bid just over a week ago, Harris has significantly outperformed him in recent polling among young people, Black voters and Hispanic voters. A Reuters/Ipsos poll published on Tuesday showed Harris with a one point lead over Trump, down from two points a week earlier. She was joined in Atlanta by rappers Quavo and Megan Thee Stallion, who performed before Harris’ speech. Harris pledged Democrats would win Georgia, a swing state the party had written off which could play a decisive role in November. She also taunted Trump for backing out of a debate with her. “Well, Donald, I do hope you'll reconsider to meet me on the debate stage, because, as the saying goes, 'if you've got something to say, say it to my face.” Harris also appeared to embrace some Biden policy priorities– vowing to bring down prices on day one of her presidency. She said she would ban more hidden banking fees, take on corporate landlords and "cap unfair rent increases." After her speech, Harris appeared on a Zoom call with supporters, telling them "this is a sprint" and asking them to volunteer. Her quickly-assembled campaign has raised $200 million since Biden dropped out, and signed up 170,000 new volunteers. Sources say Harris will reveal her new vice presidential nominee at a rally on Tuesday in Philadelphia. The location suggests Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has moved to the top of a short list of running mates.3 days ago
