The core of the old city is a consciously planned rectangle with streets in a grid pattern. In 1703 the city became the commercial capital, and in 1872 the political capital, of Jamaica.

In 1958, it joined other British Caribbean colonies in forming the Federation of the West Indies. Jamaica withdrew from the Federation in 1961 and gained full independence in 1962.
