Edward Stanley served as Prime Minister three times — from 23 February to 17 December 1852, 20 February 1858 to 1 June 1859, and 28 June 1866 to 25 February 1868. Stanley, the 14th Earl of Derby, was born at Knowsley Hall, Prescot, Lancashire on 29 March 1799.
Even today, he holds the record as the longest serving Leader of the Conservative Party. Derby was Prime Minister three times over the two decades that followed (1852, 1858-59, 1866-68). Each premiership was relatively brief and at no point did he command a majority in the House of Commons.
