May 18, 2024 · No ancient woodland survived in the 20th century. Until then Girton was devoted mainly to arable farming, formerly on a triennial rotation. Its open fields were inclosed in 1808. Girton College, one of the first two colleges established for women at Cambridge, was installed in buildings in the south by the main road in 1873.

May 21, 2024 · As a Girton alumna, I’ve been aware of the Stearn photograph of the ‘woman’ on the bicycle for many years, though not at first realising what it meant – it was used for the cover of Muriel Bradbrook’s history of the college, That infidel place, on sale at the Porter’s Lodge. Finding this new photograph has made me look closer.
