I do remember a scene with who I think is Michael Shannon. It is a flashback of him in civil war times in the snow, where a guy points a gun at him. They refer back to the flashback multiple times in the movie showing you more of the scene. I think he was the maker of the gun, like Winchester.
The protagonist found a gun somehow, and I remember him being in a big field area with an abandoned shed running around and playing with the gun, not far from the playground. Near the very end, he shoots the gun, but we don't immediately see where the bullet has gone.
