May 7, 2024 · In 1909, John Alexander Douglas McCurdy, the 20 th Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, flew an aircraft for the first time anywhere in the British Empire, taking off from Bras d’Or Lake in NS. In 1917, a ship filled with explosives exploded near the coast of Halifax, destroying much of the city and killing 1782 people.
