     The book Paradigms of Artificial Intelligence Programming, Case Studies in Common Lisp by Peter Norvig is useful in this context.

     The book describes in detail symbolic AI programming with Common Lisp.

     The examples are in the domain of Computer Algebra, solving mathematical tasks, game playing, compiler implementation and more.

     Soon there will be another fun book: The Land of Lisp by Conrad Barski.

     Generally there are a lot of possible applications of Symbolic Programming:

     • natural language question answering
     • natural language story generation
     • planning in logistics

     I've the same question and I think the point is in "A sequence is idempotent if [...] is not changed by a reexecution of all, or part, of that sequence.".

     So a squence defined by: R := { "PUT /test", "DELETE /test", "GET /test" } could give different results if a subset of request are reexecuted, despite of the fact that for each request r ∈ R will have the same side effects of N identical reexecutions of r.

     A typical scenario e.g. in DOS programming is where you disable interrupts before you modify the interrupt handler table and reenable interrupts when you are done.

     If interrupts were allowed to occur when you were modifying the table, you wouldn't know if the old or the new handler address (or half of each) was going to be used.

     You can also have situations where you want to disable interrupts within an interrupt handler itself to prevent it from being called again while you are servicing the pending interrupt.

     Non-maskable interrupts are generally ones that occur regardless of the current status of the interrupt flag - I don't recall having ever had to deal with those.

     This should make the difference clear. Basically, seq() acts like seq_along() except when passed a vector of length 1, in which case it acts like seq_len(). If this ever once bites you, you'll never use seq() again!
