Clinton is a city in Custer and Washita counties in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. The population was 8,521 at the time of the 2020 census. [4] History. The community began in 1899 when two men, J.L. Avant and E.E. Blake, decided to locate a town in the Washita River Valley.

Clinton, city, Custer county, west-central Oklahoma, U.S., on the Washita River. It was founded in 1903 at Washita Junction after a protracted dispute over the right to purchase Indian land and was named for Judge Clinton Irwin, who had been instrumental in the city’s founding.

Located in Custer County, Clinton is situated along the Washita River and at the junction of U.S. Highway 183 and Interstate 40, approximately eighty-four miles west of Oklahoma City. Originally a railroad crossing four miles south of Arapaho known as Washita Junction, Clinton was founded when a townsite sale occurred on June 3–6, 1903.

Clinton is a city of 9,000 people (2010) in the Great Plains Country of Oklahoma. It was platted in like 1902, but what really seemed to make it bloom was when it became a service-oriented community towards Route 66 travel, with cafes, motels, and filling stations to accommodate travelers.
