- 1:25'There is no more life' - Gazan on Khan Younis strikeReuters VideosSTORY: :: Eyewitnesses describe a sudden Israeli airstrike which killed over two dozen Gazans :: Khan Younis, Gaza :: July 10, 2024 :: Ghazal Nasser :: "We were just sitting, nothing was going on, everything was normal. People were playing, others were buying and selling (items). We were gathered - there were no sound of planes or anything. There were a group of women and young men (over there) and we were just sitting as normal and suddenly a rocket fell over there. Everyone started running and I opened the door to the room and I saw shrapnel that came through there. I got scared and shut the door and ran. I thought my uncles were here but thank God they were not ... they were watching a football match. There were injuries and martyrs. I witnessed this ... people thrown around and body parts were scattered, blood." :: Rushdi Kodeih :: "Suddenly as they were sitting there, looking at the internet (on their phones) and sitting there, suddenly they were hit...with no forewarning or anything. We found them scattered all over the place. We have been destroyed. There is no more life." The area struck was just outside Al-Awda Girls Secondary School in the town of Abassan. Palestinian medical officials said that most of those killed in the strike were women and children. The Israeli military said it was reviewing reports that civilians were harmed. It said the incident occurred when it struck with "precise munition" a Hamas fighter who took part in the October 7 raid on Israel that precipitated the Israeli assault on Gaza. The militant group Hamas said a renewed Israeli campaign killed more than 60 Palestinians across the enclave on Tuesday (July 9) and threatened to derail efforts to secure a ceasefire in the nine-month-old war.18 hours ago
- 2:13Hamas says new Israeli offensive may jeopardize truceReuters VideosSTORY: :: Warning Graphic Content :: Khan Younis, Gaza :: July 9, 2024 Bodies piled up at Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza on Tuesday as Israel stepped up an offensive that Hamas warned could jeopardize ceasefire talks. Palestinian medical officials said an Israeli strike nearby killed dozens of Palestinians, most of them women and children. This woman lost her son in the strike. "He was at the Mutanabi school with a number of residents, at the school gates, I would say it was targeted, but they are targeting children, Israel was only successful with killing children, humans and demolishing buildings, but they did not beat the resistance nor will they be able to.” The airstrike hit the tents of displaced families outside a school in the town of Abassan east of Khan Younis, and Palestinian medical officials say at least 29 people were killed. The Israeli military said it was reviewing reports that civilians were harmed. This was followed by Israeli military orders posted on social media to evacuate several districts in eastern and western Gaza City. The Palestinian Red Crescent transported dozens of injured from a hospital in Gaza City on Sunday and Monday, but on Wednesday said that its crews were unable to answer dozens of distress calls due to the intensity of the bombing there. - 2:23For ex-prisoner, return to ruined Gaza brings anguishReuters VideosSTORY: Palestinian Youssef Mikdad spent more than two decades in an Israeli jail, where he dreamed of returning one day to a prosperous Gaza Strip where he could make up for lost time with his children. Released last week, he found his house destroyed and his homeland reduced to rubble by Israeli bombardments. He walked through neighborhoods laid waste by air and artillery strikes and found Palestinians displaced many times over by the Israeli offensive living in tents on the beach. "I was surprised by all the destruction I’ve seen, with the displacement of people, no one is living in their houses, the famine I’ve seen in the country, none of the basic life necessities are available in Gaza at all. I haven’t traveled around because I can’t, there’s no car to travel with, no gas and people can’t even walk. People can't even walk for half a kilometer without falling into despair over the suffering they see.” Mikdad's daughter Haya - his favorite child, he says - was just four when he was imprisoned. She was killed by an Israeli airstrike on Gaza City in March, one of more than 38,000 Palestinians killed in Gaza since the start of the war. "I didn't see her as a bride when she got married, but I longed to see her with her children. I was surprised during Ramadan - I got the news while in prison that she was martyred along with her four children and husband. It was such a shock for me - like a bolt of lightning from the sky." Mikdad was seized by Israeli forces from his house in a Gaza City suburb during a raid in 2002. He was convicted of being a member of Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the armed wing of the Fatah faction, and served time in several Israeli prisons. He said the atmosphere inside changed radically after Hamas attacked southern Israel last October 7, killing 1,200 people and taking about 250 hostages. Prisoners were tortured, went hungry and were humiliated, he said. Widespread reports of mistreatment of detainees in Israeli prisons have added to international pressure on Israel for its conduct of the Gaza war, now in its tenth month. In May, the U.S. State Department said it was looking into allegations of Israeli abuse of Palestinian detainees. The Israeli military did not immediately respond to a request for comment about prison conditions.3 days ago

The militant Islamist group has dropped a demand that Israel first commit to a permanent ceasefire before signing the agreement, and would allow negotiations to achieve that throughout the six-week first phase. If accepted by Israel, a Palestinian official close to the internationally mediated peace efforts said it could lead to a framework agreement, ending the nine-month war. A source in Israel's negotiating team, speaking on condition of anonymity, said on Friday there was now a real chance of achieving an agreement. A spokesperson for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Saturday. :: Tel Aviv, Israel "For the first time in many months, we feel a spark of hope." Businessman Abu Samer Shaat says the aim of this new workshop is to provide employment for displaced people... And help the enclave’s economy after nine months of Israeli bombardment. Shaat’s old factory in Rafah was destroyed. “My factory was destroyed, and I retrieved machinery from under the rubble, from the strikes. I retrieved the material; the fabric, thread and all the material for the work. I opened this factory, and I fixed it.“ Nearly all of Gaza’s 2.3 million inhabitants have lost their homes since the Israeli military campaign launched in response to the October 7 attack by Hamas. Many people are living in tents or shelters and struggling to afford food and goods among the ruins. Shaat estimates his losses due to the war are around $6 million. And with Israel only allowing in some humanitarian supplies, ordinary goods such as clothes are in short supply. Tailor Sami Hassouna travels about an hour each way to get to work. “We got the opportunity to work in our field of work,” he says, while adding: “We need continuity, and this needs the entry of new raw material.” Hassouna says the tailors are working with salvaged materials for now - but he worries how long that can last.5 days ago

- 2:04Iranians vote in run-off presidential election raceReuters VideosSTORY: Iran took to the polls for a run-off presidential election on Friday (July 5). It's a vote that will test the popularity of the country's clerical rulers, at a time of widespread voter apathy. The run-off follows a June 28 ballot which saw historic low turnout. Over 60% of Iranian voters abstained from the snap election for a successor to Ebrahim Raisi, following his death in a helicopter crash. The vote is a tight race between low-key lawmaker Masoud Pezeshkian, the sole moderate in the original field of four candidates, and hardline former nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili. The poll will have little impact on the Islamic Republic's policies. But the president will be closely involved in selecting the successor to Iran's 85-year-old supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who decides on top state matters. He spoke to State TV after casting his vote on Friday. “I have heard that people's enthusiasm and interest are greater than before. I hope that's true, and if so, it's delightful. I hope our dear people - by the grace of God - are successful and choose the best.” Khamenei on Wednesday (July 3) acknowledged "a lower than expected turnout" in earlier voting. But said, quote, "it is wrong to assume those who abstained in the first round are opposed to the Islamic rule." Voter turnout has plunged over the past four years. Something critics say shows support for Iran's current system has eroded, amid discontent over financial hardship and curbs on political and social freedoms. Turnout for a parliamentary election in March was only 41%. The election coincides with escalating regional tensions due to the war between Israel and Iranian allies Hamas in Gaza, and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Iran also faces increased Western pressure over its fast-advancing nuclear program. The final result will be announced on Saturday (July 6), though initial numbers may come out sooner.6 days ago
- 0:31UN says Israel evacuation order 'wiped out' bid to improve Gaza aidReuters VideosSTORY: :: A senior U.N. aid official says an Israeli evacuation order has ‘wiped out’ attempts to improve aid deliveries in Gaza :: July 3, 2024 :: Andrea De Domenico, Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs: "In the last weeks we have been discussing a lot with the Israeli and the humanitarian community, how to resume our ability to bring assistance in from Karem Abu Salem, so inside Gaza and distribute throughout the Strip. And we have been engineering a lot of solutions and trying and testing, improving and failing at times - at times - and now with this evacuation order, all this has been, again, wiped out." Israel has been critical of U.N.-led aid operations in the enclave of 2.3 million people, where the U.N. says distribution is not only hampered by the nearly nine-month-long war between Israel and Palestinian militants Hamas, but also lawlessness. Israel's military announced this month a daily daytime pause in attacks to facilitate the collection of aid from Kerem Shalom, but the U.N. has said the lawlessness means it is still too dangerous and it is Israel's responsibility to restore public order and safety in Gaza. De Domenico said that in the past few weeks there had been a lot of discussions with Israel on how to improve the situation. He added that said alternative plans were now blocked by the evacuation order, but he hoped a protection agreement could be reached with the Israeli military for some areas.1 week ago
- 1:54Thousands flee as Israel bombs southern GazaReuters VideosSTORY: :: July 1, 2024 Israeli forces bombarded several areas of the southern Gaza Strip on Tuesday - in what could be part of its final push in nine months of war. It comes after Israel ordered residents of several towns and villages surrounding Khan Younis and Rafah to evacuate the day before. "An evacuation of such a massive scale will only heighten the suffering of civilians and drive humanitarian needs even higher. " :: October 13, 2023 United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric said it was the largest evacuation order in the Strip since 1.1 million people were told to leave the north of the enclave in October, citing figures from the U.N. Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA. “People are left with the impossible choice of having to relocate, some most likely for the second or even the third time, to areas that have barely any space or services, or stay in an area where they know the fighting will take place." Thousands who had not heeded evacuation orders were forced to flee their homes overnight during the Israeli bombardment. Gaza’s European Hospital in Khan Younis, which the emergency department director says has provided continuous daily services since the beginning of the war, was forced to evacuate. This man whose sick daughter was being treated there says it was their last resort as many hospitals have been destroyed. “Whoever gets wounded, will die,” he says. Israel's leaders have said they were winding down the phase of intense fighting against Hamas, the Islamist group that has governed Gaza since 2007, and would soon shift to more targeted operations. :: October 7, 2023 The war in Gaza began when Hamas burst into southern Israel on Oct. 7, killed 1,200 people and took around 250 hostages, according to Israeli tallies. The offensive launched by Israel in retaliation has killed nearly 38,000 people, according to the Gaza health ministry, and has left the coastal enclave in ruins.1 week ago
