He gained prominence for his role as Officer Willie Gillis on the crime drama series The Rookies from 1972 to 1974. Ontkean then appeared in lead roles in the hockey sports comedy film Slap Shot (1977) and the romantic comedy Willie & Phil (1980).

He returned for Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, then starred in Rapture (1993), A Chance of Snow (1998), North Shore (2004) and The Descendants (2011). After this role, Ontkean retired from acting and didn’t return for the Twin Peaks revival series.

For Yvon Barrette, the scene-stealing goalie Denis Lemieux, they used Ron Docken, the real goalie for the Jets, to film his hockey scenes.
