May 7, 2024 · Sauli Niinistö (born August 24, 1948, Salo, Finland) is a Finnish lawyer and politician who became Finland’s first conservative head of state since the 1950s when he was elected president in 2012. He easily won reelection in 2018 and oversaw the accession of Finland to NATO in 2023.
Sauli Niinistö was Chairman of the National Coalition Party from 1994 to 2001. In addition to domestic politics, he was Chairman of the European Democrat Union (EDU), with a membership of center-right parties from almost all European countries, from 1998 to 2002.
Sauli Niinistö served two full terms as the 12th President of the Republic of Finland from 2012 to 2024. He was inaugurated on 1 March 2012 and was re-elected for another six-year term in January 2018.
