Off-screen husband-and-wife Robert Sterling and Anne Jeffreys played the ghosts, with Leo G. Carroll as Topper. In 1979, ABC presented a television movie remake starring another married couple, Kate Jackson and Andrew Stevens. In 1985, Topper became the first film to be fully colorized.

Madcap couple George and Marion Kerby are killed in an automobile accident. They return as ghosts to try and liven up the regimented lifestyle of their friend and bank president, Cosmo Topper. When Topper starts to live it up, it strains relations with his stuffy wife.
