The first-ever “Pier” out over the Atlantic Ocean was probably built in 1828, according to the Long Branch city-bio book, Entertaining a Nation. Called the “Bath House Pier,” it was used mainly as docking for steamboats passing to and from New York City. I have not seen a recorded location.
