May 1, 2024 · Richard Mayhew was a founding member of Spiral, a New York-based collective of African American artists formed in 1963 in response to the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Once a jazz musician, his talent for musical improvisation carried over into his spontaneous, expressionistic landscape paintings, which he refers to as “moodscapes.”

He was educated at Columbia University, the Academia Florence, the Art Students’ League, and the Brooklyn Museum Art School.
