     You can't subtract lists, but you can subtract set

     objects meaningfully. Sets are hashtables, somewhat similar to dict.keys()

     , which allow only one instance of an object.

     The -= operator is equivalent to the difference

     method, except that it is in-place. It removes all the elements that are present in both operands from the left one.

     Your simple example with sets would look like this:

     >>> my_set = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}>>> other_set = {1, 2}>>> my_set -= other_set>>> my_set{3, 4, 5, 6}

     Curly braces with commas but no colons are interpreted as a set object. So the direct constructor call

     set(['Richmond-Brighouse'])-

     is equivalent to

     {'Richmond-Brighouse'}-

     Notice that you can't do set('Richmond-Brighouse'): that would add all the individual characters of the string to the set, since strings are iterable.

     The reason to use -=/difference instead of remove

     is that differencing only removes existing elements, and silently ignores others. The discard

     method does this for a single element. Differencing allows removing multiple elements at once.

     The original line vc_metro['Lansdowne'] -= set(['Richmond-Brighouse']) could be rewritten as

     vc_metro['Lansdowne'].discard('Richmond-Brighouse')-

     You were close. You can use dictionary comprehension to create a new dictionary with the value as the key and the new value as an empty dictionary, like this.

     dict1= {0:'One', 1:'Two', 2:'Three'}print {value:{} for key,value in dict1.items()}-

     Output

     {'Three': {}, 'Two': {}, 'One': {}}-

     Dictionary cannot maintain order. Thats One, Two and Three out of order. If you wan to access the individual dictionaries, you can do like this

     d = {value:{} for key,value in dict1.items()}d['Three']['a'] = 1-

     bp = ax.boxplot(data_to_plot,widths=(0.5, 0.5),patch_artist=True)-

     and assign each box a unique color using:

     bp['boxes'][0].set( facecolor = '#1b9e77' )

     Don't create a function named set, as you'll override the builtin of the same name.

     Assuming you want to set value in a dict, which is not totally clear from your question, you could just use assignment:

     dic={'pointer':22}dic['pointer'] = 0-print dic # {'pointer': 0}

     It's mostly just the plain English definition, if you take an existing string, and you manipulate it to make new strings, that's string manipulation. Any programmatic operation that starts with one (or more) strings and produces a (logically, if not actually) new string is a form of a string manipulation. Slicing, concatenation, repeating, interpolation, formatting, etc. are all forms of string manipulation. Reading strings from the user or a file unmodified, passing around strings without changing them, or printing existing strings is not string manipulation (you're making new strings or using existing strings without creating new mutated versions of them; no "manipulation" is going on).

     For the specific case of "Name: Abbas\nSex: Male", the string literal alone is not string manipulation, it's just a string literal that happens to have an escape sequence in it. If you originally had "Name: Abbas" and "Sex: Male" and stitched them together with a "\n" at runtime to make "Name: Abbas\nSex: Male", that would be string manipulation.
