Erik Lehnsherr, also known as Magneto, is a character primarily portrayed by Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender in 20th Century Fox's X-Men film series. Based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, he has appeared in eight installments of the franchise.
McKellen achieved worldwide fame for his film roles, including the titular King in Richard III (1995), James Whale in Gods and Monsters (1998), Magneto in the X-Men films, and Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings (2001–2003) and The Hobbit (2012–2014) trilogies.

In 1999, director Bryan Singer asked Ian McKellen to join the cast of X-MEN in the role of Magneto. Along with Blade (1998), X-MEN blazed the trail for other Marvel Comics feature films including Spider Man, Fantastic Four, Iron Man and The Avengers. McKellen has appeared in three more X-MEN films.
