When Marnie Was There is my favorite Ghibli movie but I always heard Mary and the Witch's Flower, the follow-up from Marnie director Hiromasa Yonebayashi, wasn't great. Now that I've seen it...it's fun and the animation's as gorgeous as ever, but it feels pretty slight.
I wanted to love Mary and the witch’s flower, for all the reasons you mentioned, but was kind of put off by it halfway through the movie. I’d give it a 4/10, probably wouldn’t watch it a second time.

May 2, 2024 · The 2D animation in “Mary and the Witch’s Flower” (Meari to majo no hana) is beautiful, colorful, bright and engaging from start to finish. It’s a lot better than the choppy, plastic-like 3D animation in the 2020 Ghibli film “Earwig and the Witch”.

If this lush and wondrous animated film reminds you of Hayao Miyazaki, you are not mistaken: Studio Ponoc is arguably the sole rightful successor of Studio Ghibli at this point in time.
