Mount Vesuvius is an active stratovolcano located in the Gulf of Naples, Campania, Italy. Vesuvius is the only currently active volcano in Europe, and has erupted more than 50 times in it's lifetime. Vesuvius was also the first recorded volcano eruption in history, and as such began volcanology: the study of volcanoes and volcanic activity.
