May 10, 2024 · MICROBIOLOGY. Obligate intracellular, small Gram-negative coccobacillus [ Fig 1 ], member of Rickettsiaceae family, the agent of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF). Tick-transmitted, it occurs most commonly in late spring to early fall but may occur year-round in warmer states (e.g., the Southeastern U.S.).
ETIOLOGY Caused by Rickettsia rickettsii, a gram-negative obligate intracellular bacterium. SEASON April to September in the United States (95% of patients). GEOGRAPHY Endemic in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New York, northern Mexico, central, and South America.
