     Nested Exceptions are exceptions wrapped up in another exception. People do that for multiple reasons (some of them mentioned here).

     As you can see in the stack trace the root exception is a nullpointer exception.

     So basically your NestedServletException is nothing but a NullpointerException that is caught & thrown again at some point, but wrapped up in a ServletException.

     Yes, you need to use the shmid to access the shared memory (using shmat()) after you've opened it using shmget(). But the specific block of shared memory that you'll be accessing is based on the key that you are using i.e. different process wishing to communicate via the shm will need to use the same key. If you just used a random number as a key, you might get a clash with some other unrelated program.

     I was going to suggest taking a look at Beej's Guide to IPC but I see you've already found it :)

     While browsing the web for the same answer, I found this MatLab package that implements the same function.

     In its description, the following is reported:

     SYMLOG applies a modified logarithm scale to the specified or current axes that handles negative values while maintaining continuity across zero. The transformation is defined in an article from the journal Measurement Science and Technology (Webber, 2012)

     I think it's reasonable to assume that is the original source of the scale.
