Poor Kamal (Rajesh Khanna) and wealthy Sunita Bhatnagar (Mumtaz) meet, fall madly in love and get married. But their newlywed bliss is short-lived, as Kamal soon grows irrationally jealous over the friendship between his wife and his best friend, Mohan (Sanjeev Kumar). Incensed at the treatment of his daughter, Sunita's father (Rehman) pushes the couple to a divorce.
