Monte Walsh is an aging cowboy facing the ending days of the Wild-West era. As barbed wire and railways steadily eliminate the need for the cowboy, Monte and his friends are left with fewer and fewer options.
And so Monte Walsh, 50ish, thinks in a rather disorganized way of getting into some other line of work and maybe even getting married. The thing that helps make up his mind for him is when his best friend Chet ( Jack Palance) gives up cowpunching, moves into town and marries the "hardware widow."
