The Santa Fe Trail was a 19th-century route through central North America that connected Franklin, Missouri, with Santa Fe, New Mexico. Pioneered in 1821 by William Becknell, who departed from the Boonslick region along the Missouri River, the trail served as a vital commercial highway until 1880, when the railroad arrived in Santa Fe.

Timeline of the Santa Fe Trail - Santa Fe Trail Association. Historical Context. 1806 – Zebulon Pike led a small military expedition across the plains and into Colorado to explore the Southwestern corner of the Louisiana Purchase.
The year 1846 brought war with Mexico and the Santa Fe Trail became a route of invasion. Colonel Stephen Watts Kearny led the so called “Army of the West” down the trail into New Mexico. The initial invasion was peaceful and successful and the trail then became a military supply route.
