The Farmer Takes a Wife is a 1935 American romantic comedy film directed by Victor Fleming, written by Edwin J. Burke, and starring Janet Gaynor, Henry Fonda (in his screen debut) and Charles Bickford.
The Farmer Takes a Wife is a 1934 play by Frank B. Elser and Marc Connelly based on the 1929 novel Rome Haul by Walter D. Edmonds. It was well-received upon its opening night on Broadway on October 30, 1934, at the 46th Street Theatre.
One man, Dan Harrow, does volunteer, although Molly is aghast to learn that he is a farmer, an occupation upon which the "canalers" look down. With no other option, Molly hires Dan, who is only seeking transport to Buffalo, where he intends to meet up with his girl friend, Susanna.
