There have been 83 royal yachts of the monarchy of the United Kingdom since the restoration of the monarchy in 1660. [1] Charles II had 25 royal yachts, [2] while five were simultaneously in service in 1831.
This is a list of ships of the line of the Royal Navy of England, and later (from 1707) of Great Britain, and the United Kingdom. The list starts from 1660, the year in which the Royal Navy came into being after the restoration of the monarchy under Charles II, up until the emergence of the battleship around 1880, as defined by the Admiralty .
Rob Bell examines the iconic Royal Yacht Britannia and the role it has played in history. For 44 years it was a floating palace, travelling the world, hosting world leaders and projecting British "soft power" around the globe.
