Due to Whitten’s increasingly erratic performances (stemming from a heroin addiction and longstanding rheumatoid arthritis), guitarist Ry Cooder was retained as a session musician on three tracks. Cooder had worked previously with Nitzsche on sessions for the Stones and Young's debut solo album.

Released in 1971, Crazy Horse was one of those amazing first albums that didn’t have a bad track. Sure, Neil was on board for a track or two, studio wiz Ry Cooder added some bottleneck guitar and Nils Lofgren helped out too, but this was Crazy Horse’s show all the way.

Oct 7, 2015 · After backing Neil Young on two previous records these guys jumped out of the giant´s shadow with the help of producer Jack Nitzsche, Ry Cooder and Nils Lofgren. The overall songwriting is quite good, drum and bass as a backbone are solid in a way only few Rock-bands achieved.
