    Background

    Michael's father died drunk, killed between a boat and a dock, when he was young, so he doesn't remember him. He has a deceased sister named Anna Gray. Michael and Anna were taken from their mother Polly by the parish authorities, in part due to the intervention of a neighbor. Michael was five years old. He was adopted by the Johnson family, and grew up on their Kentish farm. His adoptive parents called him "Henry Johnson."
