First gaining notoriety through critical theory and art criticism, Burton served as a writer and editor for two of the oldest and most esteemed art publications, ARTnews, from 1965 until 1972, and Art in America, from 1974 until 1976.
American artist Scott Burton (1939–1989) made what he described as “sculpture in love with furniture.” Highlighting the breadth of Burton’s innovative practice as a sculptor, performance artist, and public artist, this will be the most comprehensive exhibition in the United States since his untimely death of AIDS-related illness in 1989.
Burton admired the Russian Constructivist artists who, earlier in the century, had linked innovative forms to a concern with their practical social applications. The natural shapes of these chairs, and their beautiful surface—variously rough and smooth, and veined in gray and white—inject aesthetic pleasure into their obvious usefulness.

American sculptor and performance artist Scott Burton was born in Greensboro, Alabama in 1939. As an adolescent, he studied art with the painter Leon Berkowitz in Washington, D.C. and with Hans Hofmann in Massachusetts, before moving to New York in 1959 to complete his bachelor of arts degree (magna cum laude) at Columbia University in 1962.
