May 6, 2010 · Dallas — Michael J. Dupey, founder of the Michaels craft chain, passed away at his Dallas home on Saturday, May 1, at the age of 64. Dupey got his start in retailing in 1968 when his father bought a money-losing Ben Franklin five-and-dime store in Dallas and made him the manager. Dupey quickly began changing the store’s focus to craft supplies.
In 1973, businessman Michael J. Dupey founded Michaels in Dallas, Texas when he converted a money-losing Ben Franklin five and dime store into an arts and crafts store. In 1982, Dallas businessman Sam Wyly bought a controlling interest in the company, which by then had 11 outlets with annual revenues around $10 million.
Located in Dallas, the first store became part of the Dupey family business, a company headed by Michael Dupey's father, Jim Dupey, and aptly named Dupey Enterprises, Inc.
