The Fugitive (Albertine disparue, also titled La Fugitive, sometimes translated as The Sweet Cheat Gone [the last line of Walter de la Mare's poem "The Ghost"] or Albertine Gone) (1925) is the second and final volume in "le Roman d'Albertine" and the second volume published after Proust's death. It is the most editorially vexed volume.

  6. At the highest level of generality, La Prisonnière and Albertine disparue constitute a coherent and symmetrical whole, in that the first volume, as its title implies, describes the “imprisonment” of its female protagonist by the narrator, while its continuation details her escape and death.

  7. And yet, Albertines original depiction throughout In Search of Lost Time invites and authorizes these latter-day reworkings. Albertine dexterously manages what Proust calls the “social kaleidoscope,” with its endless inversions in status and destiny.
