Kim grew up in Syracuse, New York. He went to high school at Christian Brothers Academy and graduated from Yale University with a degree in Music.
Kim moved to Washington D.C. to teach music. In 2007, he moved to Los Angeles to attend a film scoring program at the University of Southern California.
